Come, Divine Physician
The rich ferial Masses for Lent provide us with much spiritual food for our forty-day sojourn in the desert. Today’s propers focus on Jesus Christ, the divine Physician. The stational Church for today is the Basilica of Saints Cosmas and Damian, the Syrian physicians who were martyred in Rome. In the temple dedicated to these men of medicine, it is fitting to read a passage … More →

Pray for Hilary White
Today, I learned that Hilary White has cancer. I had the privilege of meeting the astute and energetic Miss White in Rome, where she works as a journalist. She is the Rome correspondent for the pioneer in pro-life journalism, the Canadian LifeSiteNews.com. She herself is a Canadian. I recommend reading her piece Hard Lessons, which concerns her cancer struggle in light of her Catholic pro-life … More →
‘Behold, a VIRGIN Shall Conceive’
No matter who says otherwise, the prophesy of Isaias predicted that a virgin, not merely “a young girl,” would conceive and bear a son! Read the following, from Brother Francis, for insights on the matter (emphasis mine): At the direction of our great teacher and spiritual guide, Father Leonard Feeney, I made it a practice over considerable period of time to copy, as part of … More →
‘The Goal of the Ecumenical Movement Is…’
According to Austrian Father Hermann Geissler, the head of the doctrinal office of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, “The goal of the ecumenical movement is complete visible union with one Christ and with Peter in one Church.” The words are from an interview with The Portal, a new publication for Anglican communities received into the Catholic Church under the terms of Anglicanorum … More →
Misery Does Not Always Love Company
Yesterday, a friend sent me a link to this story, with the remark, “At least you’re not the only ones being harassed in NH.” The reference was to Saint Benedict Center’s religious discrimination case that yet remains a subject of litigation. My response was, “Thanks… Somehow, that doesn’t console me.” The exchange reminded me of a lighthearted but edifying anecdote about Brother Francis.

Pro-Life Icon, Dr. Bernard Nathanson, RIP
Rev. Mr. Keith Fournier, editor of Catholic Online, remembers the converted abortionist: Over the next few days, while preparations are made for his funeral, the Pro-Life world will be filled with well deserved accolades for Bernie. I know he would not feel worthy. Over the years I came to see that the man I first met kneeling in prayer carried with him an extraordinary burden for … More →
Fr. Brian Harrison Instructs ‘The Wanderer’ on the Necessity of Faith
Over the years, Saint Benedict Center and Father Feeney have been the objects of severe criticism in the pages of The Wanderer. Consider, for example, “The Cardinal Martini Problem for the Church,” by R.M. Pilon, S.T.D. The doctrinal issue that lies at the heart of this controversy was apparently taken up again in a recent “Catholic Replies” column, and the latitudinarian content of that piece … More →
Traditional Mass Again Under Siege?
The Rorate Caeli web site claims to have it on very good authority that there is a movement underway to undermine the motu proprio, Summorum Pontificum by sabotaging the long-awaited “Instruction” on the proper interpretation of that document. Here is their original post on the subject. A few more recent posts on the site give more details. Concerned Catholics can sign an online appeal to … More →
Rep. Trent Franks on Abortion
Writing yesterday about the Republicans that made it into office thanks to the “get-the-bums-out” energy of the Tea Party and others, I said this: “Now we shall see of what stuff the new Republican pols are made. Are they ‘fiscal’ conservatives (i.e., not conservatives, but mere materialists), or are they for real. I hope they heal my skepticism.” Rep. Trent Franks* might be the doctor … More →
