Catholic Church Grows in Africa, Vocations Grow in Asia

Vatican, May. 27, 2008 (CWNews.com) – A new edition of the statistical yearbook of the Catholic Church shows the Catholic proportion of the world’s population holding steady at 17.3%.

The new volume from the Vatican publishing house shows a substantial jump in Africa’s Catholic population, from 130 million in 2000 to 158.3 million in 2006, the last year for which data are available. The Catholic population grew by a more modest rate in the Americas and Oceania, while remaining stable in Europe and Asia.
