Christology is the study of the Incarnate God in His two natures, divine and human, and in His oneness of Person. Brother Francis’ course studies in particular the early Christological councils: Nicaea, Ephesus, Chalcedon, and Constantinople I and II. He also makes abundant use of the four Gospels in order to demonstrate the unfathomable mystery of the Incarnation, which is to say, how could God become man without ceasing to be God? Did Jesus have a complete human nature, a human mind and a will, a real body, born of Mary? How do we reconcile such seeming contradictory statements from Our Lord such as “The Father is greater than I,” and “The Father and I are one”? In addition to the theology course Brother also reads and comments on all twenty-four chapters of the Gospel of St. Luke. After this he continues with a history course that surveys all of the twenty-one Ecumenical Councils of the Catholic Church. He covers the heresies and controversies that had provoked the summoning of these universal synods, as well the popes, saints, emperors, kings, and heresiarchs who played major roles in these challenging periods of Church history.
