National “Catholic” Reporter eulogy says it all (if one wants to read this unCatholic source), citing the problem McBrien’s book Catholicism had with the US hierarchy: “The bishops faulted McBrien’s treatment of Jesus and sin, the virgin birth, Mary’s perpetual virginity, the fatherhood of God, and papal infallibility, as well as contraception and women priests.” Just a few “problems.” The full piece is here.
