India: Former President, Grateful to Catholics, Dies at 83

I do not know anything about this scientist turned politician other than what I just read in AsiaNews. Out of about 50 pleas for mercy from men on death row he remitted the death sentence of all but one. On several occasions he expressed gratitude to the Catholic Church for helping to build the second most populated of nations.

AsiaNews: Former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam died yesterday. The 83-year-old suffered a heart attack whilst delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management in Shillong. The Indian government has decreed seven days of national mourning. Read more here.
