NASCAR Champ: ‘Pray for the Souls in Purgatory’

ChurchPop: This is so cool!

NASCAR driver Johnny Sauter recently won the Jag Metals 350 at Texas Motor Speedway. In a post-race interview, he added a few things you don’t normally hear: “I just thank the Sacred of Jesus and the Blessed Mother. And today is First Friday so we should pray for all the poor souls in purgatory.” (full video below) See here.

This is truly beautiful. Wife, family, newborn baby, Sacred Heart, and Blessed Mother. What a guy!

He seemed a bit nervous during the time he was talking. I wonder if he prepared this “thank you” to the Sacred Heart , the Blessed Virgin Mary, and a call for prayer well before hand and was a bit concerned about the reaction.

I remember when I began making the Sign of The Cross in public years ago and audibly reciting Grace before meals there was a nervousness in my actions. I don’t have that anymore.

I guess what I’m saying is that I recognize this was likely not easy for him to declare, and so I commend the courage to say those words in a public setting. Especially these days.

We need more like him. We also need more Catholics saying Grace Before Meals and demonstrably making the Sign of the Cross. Not just bowing out heads like the protestants do. I’m convinced that this seemingly little act would do wonders to spread and build up the Catholic faith.

If we could only get 70,000,000 U.S. Catholics to do this.
