On the Lighter Side: Cardinal Siri on the 1978 Conclave

I lifted this from Andrea Tornielli in Vatican Insider.  Siri, who was number one on the list of papabili for two previous conclaves, told his friend Benny Lai, a journalist:  “The Conclave will not last more than three days, four at most. After three days these conditions are simply unbearable. Maybe we can take a seat and name it Pope if that is what it takes to get out of here. You know what I am taking into the cloistered meetings with me? Half a bottle of cognac. Not for me but for the man who will be elected. I did this in previous Conclaves and it came in very handy, believe me.”
