Prayers for the Election of a Holy and Zealous Pope

Print Email This Post

Catholics should all pray for the Holy Father daily. During the period of sede vacante following Pope Benedict’s abdication from the Chair of Peter, we at Saint Benedict Center will be offering the following prayers in lieu of the prayers for the pope that we add to our community Rosary.

All Third Order members, friends, and benefactors are encouraged to add these prayers to their family or private Rosaries.

We pray specifically that the new Pope will uphold and defend Catholic dogma (notably including extra ecclesiam nulla salus), restore the Church’s liturgical tradition, and consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, as the Blessed Virgin requested at Fatima.

Prayers for the Holy Father
(to be said after the Rosary)

V. Let us pray for a holy and zealous Supreme Pontiff.
R. That he might become a merciful and faithful high priest before God and a propitiation for the sins of the people. (Heb. 2:17)

Our Father. Hail Mary.

Let us pray.

O Lord, with suppliant humility, we entreat Thee, that in Thy boundless mercy, Thou wouldst grant the most holy Roman Church a pontiff, who, by his zeal for us, may be pleasing to Thee, and by his good government may ever be honored by Thy people for the glory of Thy name. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen. (Roman Missal: Collect from the Mass for the Election of a Pope).
