President Roosevelt Counsels Pius XII Not to Condemn Communism

In response to an inquiry from me regarding the source of the following quotation, TIA editor Atila Sinke Guimarães kindly answered me as follows.

TIAThe Editor asks:

Homer,

In the first part of your article, which we posted recently, you mentioned:

In September 1942, Pius XII said: “At the request of President Roosevelt, the Vatican has refrained from all polemics against the communist regime. . . .  May God grant that the free world may not have to regret my silence one day!”

A reader asked for the source of this quote. Do you have it? Thank you,

In Jesu et Maria,

Atila

Mr. Sweeney responds:

Atila,

The quote comes from the January 2007 edition of the Catholic Family News in an article written by Cornelia R. Ferreira titled “The United Nations: False Solution for World Peace.”

The complete quote by Pius XII was “At the request of President Roosevelt, the Vatican has refrained from all polemics against the communist regime … May God grant that the free world may not have to regret my silence one day!” The quote appears under the picture of Pius XII which is found on page 14.

The author referenced to Frère Michel’s book The Whole Truth about Fatima, The Third Secret. The background and the history of this statement can be found starting on page 140 of the book. I just discovered in reading over these pages that Msgr. Montini seemed to have had a great deal of influence in the decision.

Glad I could help,

Homer
