Christ’s Commission and Obama’s Mandate: A Teachable Moment

The big news in American Catholic circles is the Obama administration’s “contraceptive mandate.” This latest unethical intrusion of big governmnet stipulates that employers, including religious institutions, provide their employees with insurance coverage for contraceptives, sterilizations, and specific abortifacients such as Ella and Plan B.

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle summarized the situation: “If this unprecedented aggression against the religious freedom rights of Catholics is allowed to stand, then virtually all Catholic institutions — colleges, universities, secondary schools, hospitals, charities, service providers, fraternal orders, and advocacy organizations — will be forced to pay for procedures, devices, and chemicals abhorrent to the consciences of Catholics.”

Restore Communion On The Tongue Only

Brother André Marie

Two priests, Fr. Andrew Wise and Fr. John Speekman, have started a petition effort on their blog called “Restore Communion On The Tongue Only.” They, and the 2484 (so far) signatories to their petition, are asking the Pope to restore the ancient and traditional Roman practice of reception of Holy Communion that was obligatory until Pope Paul VI approved the 1969 Vatican Instruction, Memoriale Domini.

Obama Says Social Policies Motivated by Bible and Teaching of Jesus

Brian Kelly

When most of our foreign aid goes to the militarization of bogus allies and population reduction of African nations through so-called health care, one is again stunned to hear the president ignore these facts and pretend that the purpose of foreign aid is to help feed the poor and the refugees and provide medicines for the sick.

Temporary Fruits of Ecumenical Reflection

Brother André Marie

From the Holy Father’s Address to the Participants of the Plenary Session of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith:
Also the study documents produced by the various ecumenical dialogues have great relevance. Such texts cannot be ignored, because they are an important, though temporary, fruit of the common reflection matured throughout the years. Nevertheless, they are to be recognized

Obama and Administration Wage War Against Pro-Lifers Freedom of Conscience

Brian Kelly

By imperial edict, and as a dark insult to pro-lifers who were preparing their annual march to the Capitol to protest Roe v Wade and the ensuing murders of the pre-born, President Obama and self-deluded “Catholic” Kathleen Sabelius of the Department of Health and Human Services  have given new meaning to the word dictatorial. Genuinely Catholic and pro-life employers have been issued an ultimatum. They have one year to decide if they will serve God or the leviathan state. What boldness! What injustice!

Is There Fight Left in Hungary?

The Philosopher

We hope so. Daniel McAdams exposes the reheated communist apparatchiks and their fellow revolutionary travelers who run the European Union, and who are trying to bring the nation of Saint Stephen to its knees. Now the Hungarians are taking to the streets to insist that their government not be cowed by the threats of a despotic EU leadership.
Are the Hungarians at it again? Fifty-six years ago Hungarians landed what was ultimately the fatal blow to Soviet domination of Eastern Europe.

Multiracial Protest against SPLC ‘Bigots’

The Philosopher

Said one black pastor to homosexual activists: “how dare you compare your wicked, deviant, immoral, self-destructive, anti-human sexual behavior to our beautiful skin color.” What merited such a lambasting? The SPLC’s smearing pro-family organizations as “hate groups” for opposing the homosexual agenda.

Wouldn’t it be good to hear Catholic priests speaking with such conviction?

Agribusiness vs. Agriculture

Brother André Marie

Do you know the difference? If not, I suggest a glance at a blog I’ve just come across: Catholic Land Movement. In reply to our question, there is a posting on that site called “An Authentic Agriculture.” Here is the first paragraph:
Today we refer to what the giant monoculture farmers do as agriculture. This is actually a misnomer. What the vast majority of farmers do today is in actuality agribusiness. This is an important and essential distinction.

Attacks on the priesthood have grown unrelenting in recent years, as incidents of sexual misconduct reveal chronic, deeply-rooted flaws in seminaries, rectories, and chanceries across the country. Keen observers (among them some Catholics) foretell the end of the priesthood — and even perhaps a dissolution of the Church itself.

They’re wrong.

Christ Himself instituted the priesthood; with tender love, He watches over it. When sin brings down some priests, He causes grace to abound in others.

Evidence for this may be as close as the rectory of your own parish; and it extends across our country to church after church where, undeterred by scandal-filled headlines and anti-Catholic editorials, thousands of modest priests continue to serve their flocks faithfully, living quiet lives of love, prayer, and service.

To remind us of this, author Michael S. Rose has gathered here the true stories of ten of these faithful priests. Some are young, some old. They hail from different backgrounds and have different ministries; some work with the poor while others walk the corridors of power. Their talents vary as much as their temperaments.

http://store.catholicism.org/image.php?object_type=product&image_id=1463One trait they share in common: God’s grace is working vigorously in each of their lives, sustaining in them a burning love for Christ and an unwavering fidelity to His Church.

These true stories of ten real priests show us that, contrary to the media reports, priestly virtue — courage, humility, sacrifice, and above all, charity — continues to flourish in rectories throughout America. Although its ranks have thinned, there still remains a thriving priesthood of faithful men who are worthy of our support and who deserve our gratitude.

Above all, these stories remind us to be grateful to God for the gift of the priesthood itself, which He instituted on Holy Thursday as the earthly means by which so many of His divine graces flow to us.

Read these stories, and let your faith be restored.

Among the priests you’ll meet:

  • The pastor whose homilies calling for openness to life led to a parish conspicuously full of babies!
  • The military chaplain who ministers to soldiers abroad, and to the poor and destitute at home
  • The vocations director who defied conventional wisdom and created a vocations boom for his diocese
  • The elderly pastor of a ghetto parish who refused to cancel the Easter Vigil even as rioters swarmed past his church
  • The persevering Kentucky pastor whose fidelity to daily parish duties enables him to convert his people’s hearts — one at a time
  • The American missionary to the Russian Far East who battled the ghosts of Communism to establish every parish in a thousand-miles radius
  • And other inspiring stories of everyday priests to give you renewed pride in the priesthood and gratitude for the good priests God has given us.

“The military chaplain who ministers to soldiers abroad, and to the poor and destitute at home.” This hits close to home for me. There have been more than just a few Chaplains who have given their all in tending to the needs of seriously wounded men in the field; some near death. One such Chaplain was Fr. Vincent Capodanno who died on September 4, 1967 in Vietnam — just three months before I arrived in-country. The base Catholic Chaplain at my installation was Fr. Mohan; an Irishman. I wrote a story of a battle that took place at my base but I changed the name of the priest to “Fr. Michael” — in honor of our beloved Chaplain!
