Soccer Great Pele Denounces Violence and Greed Afflicting the Sport

This is a great interview that the famous Brazilian soccer player had with L’Osservatore Romano.  He spoke of the traditional values his father instilled in him and of his great honor in having a private audience with three popes, including Benedict XVI.  The soccer coach at my high school, Brother Germaine, used to talk about playing with Pele back in Brazil.  That was in 1969 when the star football player (soccer is called football outside the U.S.) was in his prime.

CNA reports: .- In an interview with L’Osservatore Romano, Brazilian soccer legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as “Pele,” said he was grateful to God “for giving me the gift of playing soccer,” and denounced the violence that has become a part of the sport in recent times.
