As something of a follow-up to The Real Gospel of Life, I compiled a small collection of supernaturally pro-life statements that have the authority of Holy Scripture or the Church’s Liturgy. These will help us establish our pro-life priorities, and provide us with abundant material for meditation.
- “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” (Psalms 115:15 This is used as a versicle response in the office of Prime, right after the reading of the Martyrology.)
- “Is it my will that a sinner should die, saith the Lord God, and not that he should be converted from his ways, and live?” (Ezechiel 18:23)
- “For he that will save his life, shall lose it: and he that shall lose his life for my sake, shall find it.” (Matthew 16:25)
- “Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you.” (John 6:54)
- “For if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sin.” (John 8:24)
- “I am come that they may have life, and may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10
- “I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live: And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this?” (John 11:25-26)
- “He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world, keepeth it unto life eternal.” (John 12:25)
- “Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
- [St. John wrote his Gospel] “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God: and that believing, you may have life in his name.” (John 20:31)
- “For in him we live, and move, and are.” (Acts 17:28)
- “My brethren, if any of you err from the truth, and one convert him: He must know that he who causeth a sinner to be converted from the error of his way, shall save his soul from death, and shall cover a multitude of sins. ” (James 5:19-20)
- “And the sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and hell gave up their dead that were in them; and they were judged every one according to their works. And hell and death were cast into the pool of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the pool of fire. ” (Apoc. 20:13-15)
- “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, they shall have their portion in the pool burning with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (Apoc. 21:8)
- “May the Body of Our Lord Jesus Christ keep thy soul unto life everlasting. Amen.” (Roman Missal, what the priest says while distributing Holy Communion.)
- “Vita mutatur non tolitur.” (“Life is changed, not taken away.” From the preface for a Requiem Mass. It’s talking about the death of the faithful.)
