People see him, a chaste, upstanding and Christian man, and then they look in the mirror and see the ugliness of their own sin, their unchastity and their willingness to cheapen themselves for a few seconds of pleasure. Reading Augustine's "City of God" I'm struck by how similar the end of Rome was to our own cultural collapse and descent into pagan darkness. Imagine if some famous gladiator in the debauched last days of the Roman Empire were to have done what Tebow is doing. Tim Tebow is the 21st century gladiator, standing tall and facing an unapproving and mocking crowd.
