Vatican’s Latin Scholar Recovering in United States

Interesting character.  Apparently, Nulli secundus, in his field.  Father Reginald Foster somehow broke his thighbone.  He also has an infection and heart problems.  The article from Catholic news Service (see link here) tells what methods he doesn’t use in teaching Latin to his classes, but it doesn’t tell what method he does use, other than immersing the student in the language by using it.  Brother Francis also taught Latin in a similar way.  He would have his students read it out loud, pronouncing the words, and then reading the translation.  He didn’t use any other book than the New Testament Vulgate.  With translation he would explain the grammar and syntax.  I am very curious to know Father Foster’s method.  He is from Michigan, so maybe there is something published in English about this.

CWN reports: Father Reginald Foster– the Vatican Latinist whose dedication to the Latin language and his students have made him a legend among Latin lovers– is recovering in the United States following a broken thighbone, an infection, and heart surgery. Father Foster, who has been replaced at his Vatican office by another American priest, Father Michael Gallagher, hopes to return to Rome upon his recovery.  Read more here.
