Catholic Culture reports: The Lourdes medical panel that has decided since 1954 which cures that take place at the should be deemed miraculous has abandoned the practice. Certain cures instead will be deemed “remarkable.” The panel’s secretary said, “The medical corps must be independent of the ecclesiastic power.”
Father Peter Gumpel, the Jesuit official of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints who is renowned for his defense of Pope Pius XII, said that the judgments of the Lourdes panel are independent of the congregation’s decisions. “Our procedures are much stricter,” he said.
