Saint Andrew Bobola (1657)

Saint Andrew Bobola was born and died in Poland. He is called the apostle of Lithuania because of his great apostolic labors in that section. He was a priest of the Society of Jesus. He was martyred at the age of sixty-seven by the Cossacks, who beat and scourged him so severely, dragged him through the streets, half burned and choked him, that when he was beatified, the Sacred Congregation of Rites in Rome declared that his was the most cruel martyrdom ever submitted to that court. Saint Andrew Bobola was beatified in 1853 by Pope Pius IX. He was canonized in 1938 by Pope Pius XI.
