Saint Gregory VII (1085)

Saint Gregory VII’s baptismal name was Hildebrand. He was a counsellor to many Popes before he was elected Sovereign Pontiff himself. He reigned for twelve years, from 1073 to 1085. So heroically did he fight for the truths and regulations of the Catholic Faith, and so bitterly was he opposed and hated by the powerful enemies of the Church, that he had to flee from Rome to Salerno, where he died. His famous last words were, “I have loved justice, and hated iniquity; therefore I die in exile.” He was sixty-five years old when he died.
