Should Catholics Celebrate the New England Patriots?

With the 2019 Super Bowl victory by the New England Patriots, should Catholics join in celebrating a capitalist corporation which promotes moral depravity and sexual perversion, and which opposes religious freedom?

The New England Patriots, as a corporation, and the Kraft family, as individuals, as foundation sponsors, and as corporate donors, have a long history of publicly supporting and copiously funding organizations which advocate the deformity of marriage, the homosexual agenda, and so-called “transgenderism.”

Patriots owner Robert Kraft was one of the most prominent public figures in a group of 165 Massachusetts business and banking leaders who opposed the Protection of Marriage Amendment in 2006.

The New England Patriots, as a corporate entity, and Bob and Myra Kraft, as individuals, after being solicited by MassEquality, signed on to an amicus curiae brief in the Obergefell case, in which the U. S. Supreme Court in 2015, in a majority opinion written by then Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy, overturned the laws of thirty-one states banning same sex so-called marriage.

Both the Patriots and the Kraft owned New England Revolution were part of the coalition which advocated for a “Yes on 3” vote in the 2018 referendum which upheld the coercive Massachusetts “transgender rights” law.

The late Myra Kraft was a major financial supporter for Keshet, an organization which promotes homosexual acceptance in the Jewish community.

BAGLY—the Boston Alliance of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Youth—a vile organization which proselytizes minors for sodomy—reportedly boasted that they received a $100,000 grant from the Kraft family.

All of these Kraft supported groups oppose conscience clause protections and religious freedom rights for those who have moral objections to the deconstruction of traditional marriage.

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment: “The Catechism of the Catholic Church, promulgated by Saint John Paul II in 1992, describes homosexual behavior as “grave depravity,”  while Catholic tradition characterizes the sin of impurity against nature as the second of the four sins “which crieth to heaven for vengeance.”

“Catholics, to be faithful to their Redeemer, must learn to be counter-cultural. They should neither celebrate or subsidize individuals or corporations which undermine Divine and natural law, which promote mortal sin, which oppose the liberty of the Church, and which encourage the persecution of Christians.”

“The easy going social conformity of previous generations of American Catholics, with their ethic of assimilation and their tradition of accommodation, is no longer adequate for a time when Christian civilization is being targeted for cultural extinction. American Catholics must defend the Faith as their ancestors did in Europe, with the cardinal virtue of fortitude, and with the understanding that if they are ever to be members of the Church Triumphant in heaven, they must first be members of the Church Militant on earth.”
