Bad Granite-State News: Assisted Suicide Bill Narrowly Passes N.H. House

We called our State Reps and asked them to oppose this bill. In both cases, they were already planning on opposing it. The bill won by a mere three votes, which is a very narrow margin indeed in the New Hampshire house. (We have 400 State Reps, with two vacancies currently.)

Here is a report from MSN:

CONCORD, N.H. (Amanda Gokee/msn.com) — The New Hampshire House narrowly passed a bill that would legalize medical aid in dying in a vote of 179 to 176 Thursday.

The controversial proposal outlined in House Bill 1283 is also often called physician-assisted suicide, a name some proponents have rejected as inaccurate and pejorative.

Lawmakers have considered the issue previously, but this time it had the backing of a grassroots coalition of people who want access to it for themselves and family members. Oregon was the first state to adopt the policy in 1997, and it is now legal in 10 states and Washington, D.C.

The bill moves on to the Senate. As one of our reps told us via email, “I am hopeful that the Honorable Senators will be able to defeat the bill.” Let’s pray.
