Maury Buford, Exemplary Catholic and Retired NFL Punter

Reading this interview I was delighted to see what Maury Buford had to say about the Bears Walter Payton, one of the best all time running backs. I wrote a tribute to Payton back in 2010 here.  It is worth a read, even if you are not a football fan. He was truly a humble man. Buford says that, although not a Catholic, “His Sweetness” would attend Mass with the Catholic players and sit in the back. He would always ask the chaplain, Father Nick Marro, to give him a blessing afterwards. I pray Walter Payton died with the Faith.

National Catholic Register, Trent Beattie: As a punter, Maury Buford was accustomed to kicking a football high into the air, as close to the roofs of indoor stadiums as possible. Now, as a roofing and construction company owner, he has literally “raised the roof” on many homes in the Dallas, Texas, area. As a Catholic, he spiritually “raises the roof” by embracing the teachings Jesus Christ as passed down through his Church.

Buford knows that even winning the Super Bowl is nothing compared to what is to come for those who return God’s love in this life. Full interview is here.
