Christ’s Commission and Obama’s Mandate: A Teachable Moment

The big news in American Catholic circles is the Obama administration’s “contraceptive mandate.” This latest unethical intrusion of big governmnet stipulates that employers, including religious institutions, provide their employees with insurance coverage for contraceptives, sterilizations, and specific abortifacients such as Ella and Plan B.

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle summarized the situation: “If this unprecedented aggression against the religious freedom rights of Catholics is allowed to stand, then virtually all Catholic institutions — colleges, universities, secondary schools, hospitals, charities, service providers, fraternal orders, and advocacy organizations — will be forced to pay for procedures, devices, and chemicals abhorrent to the consciences of Catholics.”

College President’s Letter to NH Legislators on HHS Mandate

Brian Kelly

The following is an open letter that Dr. William Fahey sent to New Hampshire’s senators and Congressman Guinta voicing his outrage over President Obama and the HHS  mandate requiring submission of all employers to provide contraceptives, sterilizations, and abortions under so-called health insurance for employees.

Restore Communion On The Tongue Only

Brother André Marie

Two priests, Fr. Andrew Wise and Fr. John Speekman, have started a petition effort on their blog called “Restore Communion On The Tongue Only.” They, and the 2484 (so far) signatories to their petition, are asking the Pope to restore the ancient and traditional Roman practice of reception of Holy Communion that was obligatory until Pope Paul VI approved the 1969 Vatican Instruction, Memoriale Domini.

Obama Says Social Policies Motivated by Bible and Teaching of Jesus

Brian Kelly

When most of our foreign aid goes to the militarization of bogus allies and population reduction of African nations through so-called health care, one is again stunned to hear the president ignore these facts and pretend that the purpose of foreign aid is to help feed the poor and the refugees and provide medicines for the sick.

Temporary Fruits of Ecumenical Reflection

Brother André Marie

From the Holy Father’s Address to the Participants of the Plenary Session of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith:
Also the study documents produced by the various ecumenical dialogues have great relevance. Such texts cannot be ignored, because they are an important, though temporary, fruit of the common reflection matured throughout the years. Nevertheless, they are to be recognized

Obama and Administration Wage War Against Pro-Lifers Freedom of Conscience

Brian Kelly

By imperial edict, and as a dark insult to pro-lifers who were preparing their annual march to the Capitol to protest Roe v Wade and the ensuing murders of the pre-born, President Obama and self-deluded “Catholic” Kathleen Sabelius of the Department of Health and Human Services  have given new meaning to the word dictatorial. Genuinely Catholic and pro-life employers have been issued an ultimatum. They have one year to decide if they will serve God or the leviathan state. What boldness! What injustice!

Is There Fight Left in Hungary?

The Philosopher

We hope so. Daniel McAdams exposes the reheated communist apparatchiks and their fellow revolutionary travelers who run the European Union, and who are trying to bring the nation of Saint Stephen to its knees. Now the Hungarians are taking to the streets to insist that their government not be cowed by the threats of a despotic EU leadership.
Are the Hungarians at it again? Fifty-six years ago Hungarians landed what was ultimately the fatal blow to Soviet domination of Eastern Europe.

Multiracial Protest against SPLC ‘Bigots’

The Philosopher

Said one black pastor to homosexual activists: “how dare you compare your wicked, deviant, immoral, self-destructive, anti-human sexual behavior to our beautiful skin color.” What merited such a lambasting? The SPLC’s smearing pro-family organizations as “hate groups” for opposing the homosexual agenda.

Wouldn’t it be good to hear Catholic priests speaking with such conviction?

Soloviev’s Meditation on the Papacy

by   August 18th, 2010
Catholicism.org

Vladimir Soloviev gives this wonderful meditation on the Petrine office in Russia and the Universal Church (reprinted as The Russian Church and the Papacy). He is writing about St. Peter’s being made the Rock of the Church by our Lord and then, almost immediately, being called “Satan” (Mt. 16:18, 23).

This confession of Peter is, then, an act sui generis, an act whereby the moral being of the apostle entered into a special relationship with the Godhead; it was this relationship which enabled human utterance to declare infallibly the absolute truth of the Word of God and to create an impregnable foundation for the universal Church. And as though to remove all possible doubt on the subject, the inspired record of the Gospel at once goes on to show us this very Simon, whom Jesus has just declared to be the rock of the Church and the key-bearer of the kingdom of heaven, immediately left to his own resources and speaking — with the best of intentions in the world, no doubt, but without divine assistance — under the influence of his own individual and uninspired personality:

[Here he quotes Mt. 16:21-23, where Our Lord says, "Get behind me, Satan" to St. Peter.]

Are we to follow our [schismatic] Greco-Russian controversialists in placing this text in opposition to the one before, and so make Christ’s words cancel one another out? Are we to believe that the incarnate truth changed his mind so quickly and revoked in a moment what he has only just announced? And yet on the other hand how are we to reconcile “blessed” and “Satan”? How is it conceivable that he who is for our Lord himself a “rock of hindrance” [i.e., a scandal] should yet be the rock of his Church which the gates of Hades cannot shake? Or that one who thinks only the thoughts of men can receive the revelation of the heavenly Father and can hold the keys of the kingdom of God?

There is only one way to harmonize these passages which the inspired evangelist has with good reason placed side by side. Simon Peter as supreme pastor and doctor of the universal Church, assisted by God and speaking in the name of all, is the faithful witness and infallible exponent of divine-human truth; as such, he is the impregnable foundation of the house of God and the key-bearer of the kingdom of Heaven. The same Simon Peter as a private individual, speaking and acting by his natural powers and merely human intelligence, may say and do things that are unworthy, scandalous, and even diabolical. But the failures and sins of the individual are ephemeral, while the social function of the ecclesiastical monarch is permanent. “Satan” and the “hindrance” have vanished, but Peter has remained.

We pray that the divine infallible magisterium of the “ecclesiastical monarch” will soon overcome the human frailties which have plagued our Lord’s Church in recent decades. Our Lady will soon show us that the remedies for the Church’s present woes will come to us through the Vicar of Christ.

I very much appreciate this meditation being posted. Some months back I was in a blogging row wherein my opponents implied that the pope could not sin against Faith even as a private person. (When not acting as pope)

It occured to me afterward that if it was impossible for him to sin against Faith as a private person than it would also be impossible for him to make a meritorious act of Faith. What a tragedy in being elected pope.

    Rasha Lampa,

Are you the administrator of the Holy Unia blog? I recently discovered it, and it is really impressive! God love you!

John Chabot has run up against a common problem in discussions about the charisms of the Papacy, namely: that many, many people confuse infallibility with impeccability. The Soloviev analysis is a great answer to people who have this confusion.

It has always fascinated me, too, that such opposites as sede-vacantists on the one hand and papolators on the other both share this same misunderstanding. Both of them must think the Pope is gifted with impeccability. So what happens, when the Holy Father makes some unfortunate utterance or allows some abuse to continue, is that the papolators will go through ridiculous mental gymnastics to convince themselves that the institution of altar girls, to take one example, must be Divinely inspired because the Pope allows it, while the sedevacantists, when they see these scandalous things, conclude then that he can’t be a legitimate Pope!

I wonder if these two camps, who must despise each other, realize they share the same error?

Scandal? Just dip into a little bit of Church history and look at the Papacy in the late 800′s to 900′s; boy popes; debauched popes, etc. If it were strictly a human institution, then it would have fallen long ago! BUT! Christ Himself, promised that the gates of hell would not prevail against Her. And now, I believe, the pendulum is finally beginning to turn.. Thanks be to God!
