From EWTN’s YouTube channel:
Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa has been living in the Holy Land for over 35 years and so has seen his share of conflict and violence. But in this exclusive interview with EWTN’s Colm Flynn, he says that this war is more intense in so many ways. He adds that he is hopeful a ceasefire will be reached but not optimistic, and when it comes to peace, he believes ‘that train has left the station.’ Cardinal Pizzaballa was appointed by Pope Francis as the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem in 2020.
There is also a write-up of the interview at the National Catholic Register.
The Holy See has long been for a “two-state solution” in Palestine. It is therefore significant that Cardinal Pizzaballa is explicitly saying that a two-state solution is now “not realistic.” Given the context of the words, it’s difficult to tell if His Eminence means this absolutely, or as a means to bring about peace in the current circumstances. I would find it hard to believe that this declaration was not something he had not first vetted by the Holy See’s Secretariat of State, not that I claim any expertise in Vatican diplomacy.
The eight-minute interview is informative:
