Following immediately after the month of the Sacred Heart, July is the Month of the Precious Blood. The first day of the month is the Feast of the Precious Blood.
In the nineteenth century, there was a real flowering of devotion to the Precious Blood, thanks to such notables as Saint Gaspar del Bufalo, Father Frederick Faber, and, of course, Blessed Pope Pius IX, who instituted the Feast in thanksgiving for the ending of his exile in Gaeta. (The feast was later moved by Saint Pius X to July 1.)
Here are some offerings on this site about the Precious Blood:
- Precious Blood, Holy Grail — article by Charles A. Coulombe
- The Most Precious Blood of Jesus — short entry for liturgical feast
- The Precious Blood and Saint Catherine of Siena — article by Brian Kelly
- The Precious Blood: the ‘Mystery of Faith’ — Ad Rem by Brother André Marie
Offsite, there is also an early Reconquest show I did on the subject (Episode 31): The Precious Blood Of Jesus. (Please consider a subscription to the Crusade Channel.) In it, I discussed Old Testament types of the Precious Blood, the various outpourings of the Precious Blood that are recorded in the Gospels, and the significance of the Mystery in light of the Holy Mass and the reception of Holy Communion. Passages from Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Hebrews, and a Sermon of Saint John Chrysostom are prominently featured. Below is a YouTube “commercial” I did for the show.
