Nearly $1 Million in Catholic Funds Provided to Organization Running Two Proxy Groups that Promote Abortion, Sex-Change Surgeries

Washington, DC — The Lepanto Institute has published the first of a series of new reports on organizations receiving funds from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), the anti-poverty program of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).  Having received $760,000 from the CCHD since 2004, the United Workers Association (UWA) is caught funding and operating two separate organizations pushing for funding for Planned Parenthood, abortions, and sex-change operations with Medicaid funds.

“I personally reported UWA to top officials at the USCCB back in 2011 for supporting same-sex ‘marriage’ with Equality Maryland,” said Michael Hichborn, president of the Lepanto Institute.  “I was assured that this was all a mistake, but after I provided UWA meeting minutes to the USCCB, my concerns were rebuffed.  And now, we find that funding has continued and UWA is directly involved in pushing grave moral evils.”

According to several of UWA’s tax filing documents, it founded and is the fiscal sponsor for Put People First – PA! (PPF-PA).  UWA is even identified as being “responsible” for PPF-PA’s Facebook page, which would include all of its contents.  In speeches, marches, and other activities, PPF-PA forcefully called for federal funding for Planned Parenthood, called abortion a “human right,” and demanded that sex-change operations be included in Medicaid.

Another project founded by UWA is called Healthcare is a Human Right – Maryland (HCHR-MD).  And much like PPF-PA, HCHR-MD heavily promotes the so-called “right” to abortion, public funding for abortion, and so-called “gender affirming care.”

“This is just one out of 66 bad organizations we discovered receiving CCHD funds over the last three years.  That’s 31% of the 211 organizations receiving national CCHD grants over that time,” said Hichborn.  “Since the very first year of its founding, the CCHD has been caught over and over, funding the enemies of the Cross of Christ, and after 50 years, it’s time it comes to a complete end!”

The Lepanto Institute is maintaining its call to bishops to withdraw their dioceses from the CCHD program and to push for the CCHD’s complete and permanent closure.
