He was a Benedictine monk and a great supporter of the future Saint Gregory the Great who was Pope from 590 to 604. Saint Eleutherius, although an abbot at the monastery of Saint Mark near Spoleto, retired to Saint Gregory’s abbey in Rome where he lived as the simplest monk. Because of his humility, God gave him great powers to work miracles, including the raising of a dead man to life.
