This YouTube video of Thomas Sowell reading from his own book is embedded here on Catholicism.org because I have just interviewed Dr. Gracjan Kraszewski, author of the book, Catholic Confederates. Whenever there is talk of the Catholic Church in the Old South, people will, sooner rather than later, bring up slavery; therefore, I thought it advisable to make Dr. Sowell’s scholarship available as a valuable accompaniment to the interview.
Dr. Kraszewski and I did discuss slavery in the interview, the position of some of the Southern Bishops on the institution, and, more importantly, the position of Blessed Pius IX — whose view Dr. Kraszewski and I share, by the way. Dr. Sowell, a highly regarded African-American intellectual, presents in this brief excerpt, some very important historical context to any discussion about slavery.
