The Chant

This lighthearted poem is based, in its poetic structure, on “The Yak,” by Hilaire Belloc.

As a help to all souls, let me recommend chant
—Specific’ly Gregory’s kind.
It will order your ardor and surely implant
The seedlings of peace in your mind.

The monks of Solesmes, (a great abbey in France),
For practic’ly two hundred years,
Have studied, perfected, and passed down these chants,
Which cause even them to shed tears.

So your parish priest really ought to be told.
And if he is honest and good,
He will welcome at Mass this great music of old
— At least, I can say that he should.
