Vatican’s Worship Chief Promotes Kneeling for Communion

Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera, confirmed last week as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, has advocated reception of Holy Communion according to the Church’s ancient tradition, kneeling and on the tongue. When asked if this were simply a question of external form, he replied that “it is not just a matter of form,” and went on to discuss the “profound meaning” of a man kneeling before God in adoration.

His concluding words on the subject may point to an alteration in the Church’s current discipline for the novus ordo Mass: “What we have to grasp is that profound attitude of the man who prostrates himself before God, and that is what the Pope wants. (Emphasis mine.)

Vatican prefects don’t generally say something is “what the Pope wants” unless they are really speaking for the Man in White himself. That Canizares Llovera has earned for himself the name he Ratzingerino — the “Little Ratzinger” — is a sign of his like-mindedness with the Holy Father, who is said to be amused by the sobriquet.
