On Friday, May 29th, Reporter Lance Reynolds of the Boston Herald, contacted the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts, seeking a comment on the decision of the Boston Public Library — one of the city’s most venerable cultural institutions — to host so-called Drag Queen readings to children in library facilities, as part of Pride Month.
In response, League Executive Director C. J. Doyle issued the following statement:
“Drag Queen readings are a demonic assault on the innocence of children, who are being exploited to mainstream the sexual deviancy of transvestites.
Having such depraved events hosted by public libraries sends a clear, uncoded message to any one who holds traditional moral beliefs — faithful Catholics, Evangelical Protestants, Orthodox Jews and others — that they are now second class citizens in Boston, a disfavored minority whose principles are disapproved by the government.
The sincerely held views and values of these citizens are not only irrelevant to the City of Boston, but, apparently, are so bigoted and benighted that they must be publicly repudiated at taxpayer supported institutions.
The First Amendment mandates government neutrality, not government hostility, to religion and religious values.
Boston’s public libraries — once a source of pride for all Bostonians — are no longer neutral public spaces, where everyone is welcome.
Now, under Mayor Michelle Wu, they have become active belligerents, advocating for one side, in America’s culture wars.”
Doyle’s remarks were published in a story in the Boston Herald, which appeared today, June 1, 2026.
