Nothing surprises me anymore. Apparently the Latin Mass Society missed a cue on the protocol. So, what they thought would be “a formality” ends up, when the issue is the traditional Mass, being a major infraction against canon law. So much for Pope Benedict’s Motu Proprio. When the dust settles it is not going to be Archbishop Burke who is embarrassed by this insult, but Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor.
Catholic Culture reports with link to London Telegraph article:
Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor has thwarted a plan by the Latin Mass Society to have Archbishop Raymond Burke celebrate the extraordinary form of the liturgy in June at Westminster cathedral. Noting that the cardinal controls the liturgical use of the cathedral, a spokesman said that Archbishop Burke could attend the June ceremony, but the Latin Mass Society did not have the authority to issue an invitation without the cardinal’s approval. In such cases the approval of the local bishop is usually considered a formality, and only very rarely denied to a visiting prelate.
