Doc Blanchard Dead at 84: “He Made His Own Interference”

One of the greatest fullbacks to play the game, the 1945 Heisman Trophy winner “Doc” Blanchard preferred a career as an Air Force fighter pilot to professional football.  He served his country during the Korean and Vietnam wars.

His coach at West Point, “Red” Blaik, summed up the the man’s gridiron talents: “Imagine a big bruising fullback who runs one hundred yards in ten seconds flat, who kicks off into the end zone, who punts fifty yards, who can also sweep the flank as well as rip the middle, who catches laterals or forward passes with sure-fingered skill, and who makes his own interference. That’s Mr. Blanchard.”

Being that he played for Saint Stanislaus high school in Bay City MO, I am assuming that he was a Catholic. May he rest in peace.  Read more here.
