If you were a putatively excommunicated Bishop in a group accused (rightly or wrongly) of being schismatic, and if your group (let’s call it a “society”) were reportedly in negotiations with Rome — only you don’t especially want your group to be in negotiations with Rome — what would you do? Perhaps you would go on Swedish television denying the holocaust, even though your superiors wouldn’t want you to? Maybe you’d even arrange it so that the interview took place in Germany, where this stuff is considered criminal.
That might work.
