Mass. Gov. Healey Authorizes Distribution of Free Birth Control Pills

The following is a Catholic Action League of Massachusetts news release…

On March 5th, the Healey/Driscoll Administration announced that it was authorizing Bay State pharmacists to dispense, over the counter, oral contraceptives, without cost, to Health Safety Net patients, and to recipients of MassHealth.

Under a so-called MassHealth Standing Order, a one year supply of Norgestrel tablets will be provided, free of charge, to any MassHealth or HSN member of reproductive age, who requests the pills.

As of October, 2024, more than two million residents of the Commonwealth were enrolled in MassHealth. No cost estimate was included in the program announcement.

According to Governor Maura Healey, “Our administration is committed to expanding access to reproductive and maternal health care across Massachusetts.”

Norgestrel is a hormonal contraceptive, which means it is an abortifacient. All hormonal contraceptives are not only prophylactic, but abortifacient, in as much as they can not only prevent conception, but can, potentially block implantation after conception, destroying a human life.

In July of 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, under President Joe Biden, waived the requirement for a prescription, from a physician, to obtain Norgestrel, declaring it a “nonprescription oral birth control pill.”

It was the first such nonprescription oral contraceptive ever approved by the federal government.

The Catholic Action League called the Healey Administration’s decision to authorize free birth control for recipients of state subsidized health care “another depraved example of Maura Healey’s demonic obsession with killing as many pre-born children as possible in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”

Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle made the following comment:

“Governor Healey is waging a propaganda war against pro-life pregnancy care centers in Massachusetts, using a $1 million appropriation of taxpayer monies to demonize them.

She had previously vowed, as a candidate for Attorney General, to shut down every crisis pregnancy center in the state.

When Healey became governor, she ordered the University of Massachusetts to stockpile 15,000 doses of the lethal abortion drug, Mifepristone.

During her tenure as Attorney General, she supported the radical ROE Act, which eviscerated all remaining restrictions on abortion in the Commonwealth and maximized the ease and convenience of third trimester abortions.

Now, Healey has decided to dispense, without charge, abortifacient contraceptives to hundreds of thousands of women on state assistance in Massachusetts.

Maura Healey can, justly, be described as a merciless fanatic when it comes to abortion, population control, and the suppression of pro-life speech.

Catholic institutions in the Archdiocese of Boston ought to remember that, the next time they consider inviting Healey to speak at one of their fundraisers.
