‘Melania’: the Next Chapter in Trump’s Sloppy Divorce from the Pro-Life Movement

When I was teenager, I witnessed some of the tragicomedy of Donald Trump’s divorce from his “first wife,” Ivana, on television. It was a sickening affair, and the media just loved it; but so did the public. It is to our national shame that Americans lapped up this real-life soap opera like the cheap swill we shove down our gullets at McDonald’s.

It was during the news coverage of this protracted fiasco that Ivana (a Czech), with her less-than-perfect English, referred to her estranged husband as “the Donald.” It stuck. This was one of the comical moments of the tragicomedy.

Well, “the Donald” and his whole family are now undergoing another sloppy divorce for all the world to see. They are divorcing themselves from the pro-life movement, which has long formed part of Trump’s base. It was, alas, a marriage of convenience. The latest episode in this version of the Trump divorce soap opera is Melania Trump’s upcoming memoir, titled Melania, which marks the usually taciturn former First Lady’s public endorsement of so-called “abortion rights.”

In a piece by Jonathon Van Maren at Life Site, it is made abundantly clear that, like the more politically active members of the Trump family, Meliania is not at all pro-life but firmly in the pro-abortion camp.

The timing of the memoir is significant, coming out as it does a month before the election in which abortion has been a major issue in light of Trump’s role in overturning Roe v. Wade.

Mrs. Trump does not show herself to value the faith or morals of the Catholic Church to which she belongs; rather, she echoes the talking points of Planned Parenthood as she champions the most selfish and socially destructive aspects of the sexual revolution.

Far from being lionized by Catholics and conservatives, the Trump family — which threatens to be something of a political dynasty not unlike the Kennedys — needs to be delivered from the demons of lust and murder that plague it. (No, I’m not calling anyone possessed; demons do much more than that.) Perhaps the Donald’s recent invocation of Saint Michael will help to begin that deliverance, but there is a not-insignificant thing called free will that has to be engaged.

The former president has to be told by some Catholic in his inner circle that God is not into negotiations on matters of religion and the moral law, that “the art of the deal” is not a viable alternative to penance and conversion.

Here is a little summary of some of the contents of Van Maren’s article:

  • Melania argues that women should have autonomy over their reproductive choices, stating that government intervention undermines personal liberty.
  • Despite her Catholic background, Melania claims her pro-abortion stance aligns with her principles of individual freedom and dignity.
  • The memoir discusses various reasons for seeking abortion, including medical emergencies, and defends late-term abortion, echoing pro-choice rhetoric.
  • Melania emphasizes the need for empathy towards women facing difficult decisions regarding pregnancy, advocating for lifting the stigma associated with abortion — all the while ignoring the humanity of the child.
  • Donald Trump’s recent comments suggest a shift away from his previous pro-life commitments, indicating a potential transformation of the Republican Party’s stance on abortion.
  • The Trump family’s views on abortion raise concerns among pro-lifers, as they appear to align more with pro-choice positions, especially considering that Melania echoes Planned Parenthood talking points.
  • Melania’s declaration is seen as a blow to the pro-life movement, highlighting a broader trend within the Trump family that may threaten the future of pro-life advocacy in the GOP.
