More on Darwin, Abolitionist and Racist

Just read an interesting piece in InsideCatholic.com on Charles Darwin.  The author Benjamin Wiker observes that Darwin struggled between his heart and his mind.  His racist theories conflicted with his strong opposition to slavery.  Here’s a clip from Wiker’s article.  He should send this info to Archbishop Ravasi.

“At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate and replace throughout the world the savage races,” Darwin wrote in the Descent of Man. “At the same time the anthropomorphous apes” — that is, those that look most like the human sub-species lowest on the evolutionary scale — “will no doubt be exterminated. The break [between human beings and apes] will then be rendered wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilised state, as we may hope, than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as at present between the negro or Australian and the gorilla.”
