No Brothers or Sisters, No Cousins, Aunts or Uncles, China’s “Harmonious Society” Gets More Orwellian

China’s one child policy has created two generations now where children are left with just parents and, perhaps, grandparents, for a family. I read an article some years ago that highlighted another consequence of this unnatural law: spoiled children, especially “number one son,” who doesn’t need that title anymore. He is “number one” by default, and that is resulting in boys getting treated by parents as vicarious egos. The Catholic Faith is China’s hope, and it is growing, some say even exponentially. Most sources, basing themselves on old estimates, say there are about twelve million Catholics. At least one source puts the number today at fifty million. In other words, the baptized are serious about sharing their inestimable gift. They do not bury it; they make it increase.

Catholic Online reports: In order to deal with overcrowding and crime, the Chinese government is experimenting with walled, gated communities. Residents of these communities must have I.D. in order to enter, and doors are shut promptly at 11 p.m. and open at 6 a.m. Security is accomplished with high-tech video cameras. It’s one of the solutions being considered in light of China’s huge migrant farmer population who flood the cities from the surrounding countryside. Full article is here.
