Editor’s Introduction: Below is a PDF file of a study written by Brother Thomas Mary Sennott, M.I.C.M., author, among other things, of They Fought The Good Fight. Brother Thomas Mary died on June 13, 2005, having lived his entire religious life since 1958 in what is now Saint Benedict Abbey in Still River, Massachuestts. He had a website that went online sometime in the 1990s and which was maintained for a while after his death. While it is no longer online, we have preserved the contents of that site in our digital archives here at Saint Benedict Center in Richmond, New Hampshire.
Brother Thomas Mary’s paper discusses principally these four documents:
- The Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium)
- The Decree on Ecumenism (Unitas Redintegratio)
- The Decree on Religious Freedom (Dignitatis Humanae)
- The decree on the Church’s Missionary Activity (Ad Gentes)
Also discussed are the following:
- Suprema Haec Sacra (the “Letter of the Holy Office to the Archbishop of Boston,” 1949) — a pre-conciliar document central to the Fr. Feeney controversy; and,
- Mysterium Ecclesiae (1973 CDF declaration) — cited as relevant to the subsistit in interpretation.
