RIP Yogi Berra

A colorful character and a great baseball player has passed away at 90. My friends and I, when in grammar school, used to take long walks all the time in every direction, just “foollin around” wasting time. We decided one time to check out Yogi’s house in Montclair, New Jersey, to our north.  We didn’t see the Yankee great but we did get a wave from his sons who were our age. One of them, Tim, played football for Seton Hall High School. I played for their arch rival, Essex Catholic. They beat us 7 to 6 and, at that time, Seton Hall was ranked numero uno by the major papers in North Jersey. My dad and his brother took us once by bus to see a twi-night double-header at Yankee stadium, but Yogi had been replaced by then at catcher by Ellston Howard. (Mantle and Maris were the huge attraction then. In fact, the night we went, Mantle hit a homer in each game.) So, I never did see Berra in action. Here are some of the more famous yogi-isms that everyone who loves baseball loves to hear.

“I really didn’t say everything I said.”

“It ain’t over ’till it’s over.”

And, my favorite: On selecting a restaurant: “Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.” Read more here.
