He was a native of Swabia in Germany. He was educated by the Benedictines and joined that Order when he was forty years old. He was raised to the priesthood, and sent with a group of monks as missionaries to the Magyars and eventually was made Bishop of Ratisbon. He was tutor to the Emperor Henry II. He restored many of the Benedictine abbeys of his day, raised the standard of education and was so devoted to the poor that he became known as the Great Benefactor for those who were without material possessions. Saint Wolfgang’s pupil, Emperor Henry II, became a saint. Saint Henry’s feast. day is July 15.
