Stop Public Funding of Abortion in Massachusetts

The following is a member alert from the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts

One of our most dedicated, respected, and experienced pro-life leaders in the Commonwealth is Attorney Tom Harvey, who heads the Massachusetts Alliance to Stop Taxpayer Funded Abortions.

Tom—a valiant and eloquent defender of the unborn—has just announced that he is resuming his fight to overturn Moe v. Hanley, the 1981 Supreme Judicial Court ruling which voided much of the landmark Doyle/Flynn pro-life law.

In that court decision, six unelected, black robed political appointees, cloaked in the sanctity of judicial tenure, declared that a constitution written in 1780 by John and Sam Adams, contained a right to a publicly funded abortion, for women who are indigent.

Tom Harvey has introduced an Initiative Petition for a Constitutional Amendment Regarding the Public Funding of Abortion, which states: Nothing in this Constitution Requires the Public Funding of Abortion.

Tom will begin his signature drive in September, to place the measure on the state ballot in 2028. It will be an uphill battle, but it is a life affirming cause, and it deserves your support.

At a time when Governor Maura Healey is boasting of all her efforts to expand child murder in the Commonwealth, it is vitally important that Bay State politicians understand that there are hundreds of thousands of Massachusetts citizens who are prepared to defend the right to life of the innocent unborn.

The following is a statement from Tom Harvey:

You can help to make pro-life progress on the abortion issue in Massachusetts even in this deep blue state.

Unbeknownst to many, ever since a 1981 court decision, Massachusetts taxpayers have been paying for abortions.

The Massachusetts Alliance to Stop Taxpayer Funded Abortions (STFA) plans to take initial steps this fall to end this travesty. And you can assist in this regard.

Even though the word “abortion” is not mentioned in the Massachusetts constitution, the Supreme Judicial Court in 1981 somehow ruled that abortion was a fundamental right under the constitution and that many of them must be funded by the taxpayer.

As a result, the public funding of abortion has continued year after year ever since then. And it will go on ad infinitum unless someone takes action. And that someone is you!

We are paying millions of dollars to have thousands of babies killed in abortions every year in Massachusetts.

As pro-lifers, we simply cannot accept the status quo. We have to take action. We have to stir the pot.

Even if we are unsuccessful in this effort, we still will have made progress. We will have people talking about the abortion issue.

And unless we can get people to start discussing and debating the issue, nothing will ever change.

STFA has started the process. The initiative petition to amend the constitution was recently filed with the Massachusetts attorney general’s office.

The wording is simple: NOTHING IN THIS CONSTITUTION REQUIRES THE PUBLIC FUNDING OF ABORTION.

We are trying to eliminate the public funding of abortion as a constitutional right.

The success of this petition would effectively reverse the illogical 1981 court decision.

And that is essential because, unless that court-created constitutional barrier is removed, the state legislature – even if there were a pro-life majority – could not stop taxpayer funded abortions.

Amending the state constitution is certainly a challenge – but a doable one.

To succeed with this, we do not need a majority of the legislature and we do not need the approval of the governor.

A four step procedure must be followed.

First, this fall, between early September and November 19, collect 74,574 signatures on the petition.

Second, get one quarter of the state legislature, in joint session, to vote to advance the petition.

Third, get the next elected state legislature to do the same.

Fourth, obtain a majority vote when it gets on the ballot in the fall of 2028.

You can help by doing 3 things.

First, pray for the success of this effort. There is no doubt that this is a spiritual battle.

Second, help gather signatures when the time comes this fall. Presently, start drawing up lists of family members, friends and acquaintances, who you believe would be willing to sign.

Third, consider making a monetary contribution ($25.00, $50.00, $100.00, $200.00, $500.00, $1,000.00 or $5,000.00) to finance this effort.

Funds are needed to cover for website development and hosting, printing costs, signs, mailings, and push cards.

Every dollar raised helps us move closer to the 74,000+ certified signatures needed.

Simply stated, the initiative petition will not succeed without substantial financial support.

We are praying – and working – for a victory that protects both life and souls.

Thank you for your consideration in helping STFA in this important endeavor. Let’s make some pro-life progress in Massachusetts!

God Bless,
Tom Harvey
