The Poor Man’s Response

O Prince of the realm of happiness and mirth!
Who reigns unseen in gentle majesty;
O Lord and God of all in heaven and earth,
That is or was and all that ever shall be.

You deigned, my Lord, to send inviting me.
“O come! My feast is well prepared,” you say.
I come, my Lord, I come most eagerly,
Nor do I find occasions for delay.

I have no oxen, I did not buy a field,
A treasure of precious pearls, I did not find
No golden throne I find it hard to yield;
And the empty world I am glad to leave behind.

I am ready, Lord,
At this your beck and call,
To leave behind my nothing
And seek your all.
