American Catholic website has the latest in this tense situation: Tensions are mounting in Central America as Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez masses troops on the border with Columbia (sic) and tells his military to “prepare for war”. CNA reports: The vice president of the Bishops’ Conference of Venezuela, Archbishop Roberto Luckert, warned this week that under the new law on education passed by the Chavez government, “just as occurs in the Cuban educational system, here schools will be used as instruments for imposing Communist ideology.” Read more here.
A clause in recently-passed Venezuelan education legislation backed by President Hugo Chávez has banned religious instruction in all private and public schools. “We’ll see how we will manage to carry forward education,” said Cardinal Jorge Liberato Urosa Savino of Caracas. “We are going to ask God to help all Catholics, principally those educational institutions belonging to the Church and community parishes.” More here with links.
