Massachusetts: Proposed ‘Taxpayer Conscience Protection Act’

The following is a Catholic Action League of Massachusetts press statement…

In response to an inquiry from Bob Katzen, Publisher of the Beacon Hill Roll Call, C.J. Doyle, the Executive Director of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts, issued the following statement on HD 4023 (An Act relative to taxation), filed by Representative Joseph D. McKenna (R-Webster).

The proposed legislation would allow individual taxpayers to prevent any portion of their tax liability to be used to fund abortion. That money would then be diverted to fund the Baby Safe Haven law, which is intended to protect new born infants who are voluntarily abandoned by their mothers.

Doyle commented: “Supporters of the right to life understand that abortion is the deliberate destruction of innocent, pre-born human life. They also understand that the number of legal abortions, both surgical and medical, since the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973—62 million—is genocidal in scale.”

“No person should be forced, against their conscience, to subsidize what they understand to be mass murder. The American jurisprudential tradition has held that a reasonable accommodation ought to be made respecting the sincerely held moral and religious beliefs of citizens. This legislation does just that.”

“Those who embrace the rubric of choice ought to be willing to extend the right of choice to taxpayers. Representative Joseph McKenna is to be commended for filing this important and long overdue measure.”
