The Story Behind the Painting Madonna della Strada

I came across a link to an article by Joanna in Catholic Phoenix which gives the history of the famous picture that we are all so familiar with  from Marian prayer cards of a young Madonna and Child. It was very interesting. Here is the introduction:

In the foyer of my home, directly across from the front door, a picture hangs on the wall. It’s a painting my husband bought me for my birthday some years ago. Mary is holding a sleeping Jesus clasped to her breast, and she is looking toward Heaven in an attitude of supplication and, I think, anxiety—perhaps wondering about the sword that was to one day pierce her heart.
